Through hardship, Lucy has shown resilience to embark in a career in commercial cookery

Despite the emotional hardship she has faced, Lucy continues to remain positive and has been very appreciative of the support she had received in the TtW program.

Lucy, aged 18, commenced with the Brotherhood of St Laurence TtW program in January 2018. Prior to engaging with TtW Lucy wanted to work or study in an industry where she could help people. Previously, she had volunteered with CFA and at the local hospital.

Lucy is a resilient young woman who has experienced several emotional family crisis through most of her life. When she joined TtW Lucy was looking for additional support with her employment and education goals to lead a sustainable life, to move away from the challenges of her current situation.

Lucy participated in Phase one ‘Get Ready’ and Phase Two ‘Get Hired’ activities in which she focused on career exploration, self-motivation and work readiness to create action steps for her goals. During her time in the program Lucy lost a parent and had to move home. She continued to engage in the program and applied for a Business Administration Traineeship program but was unfortunately unsuccessful. This however, did not hinder Lucy’s goals and with her youth development coach re-visited her pathway plan.  An area of interest was hospitality so with the support of her coach, Lucy visited the hospitality department of the local TAFE to investigate their courses and meet with teachers.

After successfully applying, Lucy is now enrolled in and completing her Certificate III in Commercial Cookery. She is very excited to begin work placement and then her career.  Despite the emotional hardship she has faced, Lucy continues to remain positive and has been very appreciative of the support she had received in the TtW program. Lucy now has an understanding of the education and workplace landscape to better navigate her future beyond the TtW program.
