Youth Unemployment Monitor: December 2019

A key part of the Brotherhood of St Laurence’s campaign is the Youth Unemployment Monitor, an enewsletter which is a useful source of information and policy analysis. But it's not all facts and figures. The human stories of youth unemployment are presented along the challenges young people face today.

The latest monitor focusses on the ‘long term unemployed’.  Today, 46,000 young Australians are ‘long term unemployed’, and, as youth unemployment hits 12 per cent, some 265,000 young people are in the unemployment queue.

Ben, 17, shares his story as he has discovered a satisfying career working in child care, a big U-turn from following his dad’s footsteps of working on cars.

This monitor’s Wise Words come from PwC partner Sara Caplan, who urges more employers to fish in a wider talent pool and go beyond traditional university candidates.
